Byfield with walk-off, Cougars rally for four in ninth to win series
The Barton Community College baseball team rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to earn a doubleheader sweep Monday at Lawson-Biggs Field over Colby Community College. The Cougars won game one 3-2 then rallied to capture game two 13-12. On Sunday the teams split their doubleheader as Colby took the first 9-7 with the Cougars taking the nightcap 9-5. With the 3-1 series win Barton improves to 4-4 in conference play and 10-8-1 overall while dropping Colby to 2-4 and 8-9. The Cougars will return to Lawson-Biggs Field on Wednesday as Barton hosts the junior varsity squad from Bethany College in a 4:00 p.m. nine-inning contest.

Caleb Cherryholmes led off the Barton ninth with a walk as the Cougars needed a three-run inning to force extra innings. Bryce Minor pinch hit for Brian Regan and fought off a 2-2 count singling to left field putting the Cougars in great position to rally. Following an Evan McDonald walk, the Trojans got Kyle Cromwell to fly out to short right field to damper the spirits just slightly. With the Barton bench in full rally mode, Jacob Richardson drew the Cougars to within two reaching on a fielder's choice pushing across Cherryholmes. Stealing second base, Richardson put himself in scoring position setting the stage for Trevor Turner to deliver his fourth hit of the a game, a clutch full count two RBI single to center scoring Minor and Richardson to tie it at twelve.
Following Turner swiping second base, Scott Tyler drew a walk to bring up Braxon Byfield for the heroic role. Down in the count 1-2, Byfield patiently waited through two more pitches before lacing a shot to left field easily scoring the speedy Turner from second.
Tanner Shoemaker picked up his first win of his Cougar career pitching the last two innings scattering four hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
