The troubles the Barton County Community College men's basketball team had during its first two games back from the Holiday Break appear to be gone. The Cougars earned their first road win of the Jayhawk West season Saturday, knocking off Garden City, 69-68.
The win moves Barton County to 15-2 overall this season and 2-1 in the Jayhawk West. Garden City falls to 12-5 overall and 1-2 in the West.
Highlights
The Cougars led most of the contest, including building a 6-point lead on several occasions in the first half. But a late charge by the Broncbusters to end the first half gave Garden City a 33-31 lead at the intermission.
Barton, however, came out on fire to start the second half, and quickly rebuilt that 6-point lead at 43-37 on a layup by Nouha Diakite. Barton continued to lead the contest, pushing the lead to 57-48 with 10 minutes to play on a pair of Rodney Epperson free throws. The Cougars led by as many 8 points late in the contest, following a jumper Epperson for a 67-59 advantage with 2:49 left in the contest.
But the Broncbusters had a rally left in them. In fact, it was a 9-0 really to take a 69-68 lead. Garden City took the lead with 33 seconds to play on a putback by Mookie Works following a Justin Rose turnover.
Rose would more than make up for the turnover. The freshman from Junction City found himself open in the lane on the Cougars following possession and took it to the basket for a layup and a 69-68 lead with 13 seconds to play. Garden City would get a final closely contested jumper by Clarence Williams to no avail as the Cougars earned the road win.
Rose and Robert Whaley each scored 15 points to pace four Cougars in double figures. Whaley added 11 rebounds to lead the Cougars. Diakite added 14 points and 9 rebounds while Epperson tossed in 12 points. Works led Garden City with 21, followed Karlton Mims with 18.
