Vesta leads Barton Wrestling against power packed Bob Smith Open

Two days after hosting its first ever home match and taking on a ranked opponent, the Barton Community College wrestling team again hit the mats against nationally ranked wrestlers competing Sunday in the annual Bob Smith Open hosted by Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.  Featuring nearly 300 wrestlers from powerhouse wrestling schools including four-year universities, the Cougars compiled a 15-30 individual match record with one reaching the championship bracket semifinals.

Having picked up a historic lone win Friday in the Cougars' inaugural home dual, Zach Vesta made his way to the 149 weight semifinals before losing a one-point decision in the semifinals.  Vesta began his day with consecutive one point victories the first coming 9-8 over Aj Hurtado of the University of Nebraska-Kearney before defeating Colby Community College's DaKorey Polley 6-5.  Getting a pin 3:20 into his quarterfinal match over the University of Central Oklahoma's Brandon Stanley,  Vesta lost a hard fought 9-8 decision to the host Tigers' William Homalon.  Bounced to the consolation side of the bracket, Vesta again took on another UCO wrestler but this time it was Vesta being planted to the mat right before the first period buzzer to Will Steltzlen.  Beginning the season with four wins in five individual matches, the 3-2 day for Vesta moves the Manhattan freshman's season record to 7-3.
