Barton women finish runner-up at Region VI Indoor Championships.
The Barton Community College women's track and field team placed runner-up this weekend at the KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships held at Pittsburg State University's Robert W. Plaster Center.
The Cougars captured six individual championships amongst their eighteen scoring performances in accumulating 113 points over the two-day event. Cloud County Community College won the title with 183 points with Barton finishing 18 points ahead of third place Fort Scott Commuity College and Butler Community College.
Barton returns to Pittsburg on March 5-6 for the indoor season finale in the two-day NJCAA Indoor Championships.
Barton also added to its national qualifying list as the 4x400m relay team of Shemia Odaine, Jayda Dillon, Dayjsha Fanning, and Lashanna Graham clocked a third place and nation's fourth best time of 3:51.67 in their first race of the season.
Twenty of Barton's points came from Ana da Silva in being named the Region VI Female Field Athlete of the Meet. In Saturday's weight throw, da Silva uncorked a season best 18.22m (59-09.50) throw, a foot further than her nearest competitor and just two inches from her program second best effort. Also second best on the historical chart in the shot put, Da Silva's 15.36m (50-04.75) mark was the event's top by nearly four feet. Barton earned nine additional points in the two events with Jada Sewell's person best 13.29m (43-07.25) placed sixth in the weight throw while her 12.71m (41-08.50) mark in the shot put placed third overall.
Barton moved up from third place after day one results, powered by five region titles, the first coming from Ayesha Nelson winning the 60m hurdles in 8.82.
Annia Ashley joined Da Silva as a double winner, earning 25 points towards the Cougars' total. Ashley soard to both the triple jump (12.33m, 40-05.50) and high jump titles (1.66m, 5-05.25) after placing fourth in Saturday's long jump (5.58m, 18-03.75). Joining Ashley in the triple jump with a fourth place marking (11.14m, 36-06.75), Nia Robinson nearly had the long jump title behind a season best 6.06m (19-10.75) but a final competitor effort pushed her into the runner-up position . Shemia Odaine gave the Cougars three more points in the event with a personal best 5.53m (18-01.75) leap to place sixth. Odaine added five more points to the team total in the 60m dash, recording a 7.73 in finishing fourth.
Kayan Green earned the final running event title for Barton, clocking a 2:16.34 while Sasha Brown's 2:31.14 was good enough for sixth.
