Jim Cartisser, Barton Volleyball Head Coach

Bio

Jim Cartisser comes to Great Bend after spending 18 seasons at the College of Southern Idaho, helping the program to four NJCAA National Titles and a national runner-up placing.

The Head Coach for the last six of his eighteen seasons at CSI, Jim continued the program’s success compiling an 118-61 overall record including the 2018 NJCAA crown.

“Jim comes to Barton a proven winner!” remarked Barton Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs. “His background and resume in collegiate volleyball speaks for itself. We look forward to Coach Cartisser arriving in Great Bend to guide Barton Volleyball to NJCAA prominence.”

Jim becomes the 17th coach in the program’s 46th season beginning in the Fall of 2025.

Serving the first twelve seasons at CSI as an assistant coach, the last eight of those assisting his late wife Heidi, the duo led the Golden Eagles to a pair of NJCAA national titles and a national runner-up finish.

Becoming the fourth head coach in CSI’s program history following Heidi’s passing, Jim led the Golden Eagles to their 12th NJCAA Championship crown in 2018 earning Jim both the AVCA and NJCAA Coach of the Year.

A native of Oregon, the love of volleyball started on the sand courts carryied onto the hard court collegiately competing for Portland State University’s club team.

Entering the collegiate coaching ranks in 1994, Jim has served as either a head or assistant coach throughout his career, along with coaching multiple club team programs.

Coaching stints began at Edmonds Community College (1994-97), Treasure Valley Community College (1998-2000), Chicago State University (2000-2004) while also the head men’s volleyball coach at Kendall College (2002 and 2003).

As the Cartisser family was seeking to be closer to home, Jim accepted an assistant position to Ben Stroud at CSI helping the Golden Eagles to the 2005 NJCAA National Title. He additionally started the Club Canyon Volleyball Club, managing the club from 2006 to 2014.

After a brief coaching break to pursue real estate interests, Jim returned to CSI in 2011 to assist his wife Heidi resulting in a pair of NJCAA National crowns and runner-up finish.

Following Heidi’s passing, Jim became the fourth head coach in CSI’s program history.
