In a Wednesday release from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) office, ten Barton Community College student-athletes received NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, formerly known as the NJCAA's Academic All-American award. The ten Cougars were amongst the NJCAA record 2,036 sophomore level student-athletes to receive the award.
The Barton Community College baseball team earned two of the nine Golden Glove Awards and landed three players on the KJCCC All-Conference Western Division Team announced recently. Sophomores Jordan Plank and Trevor Turner headline the defensive awards while Evan McDonald earned second team All-Conference honors with Plank being joined by freshman Lance White landing on the honorable mention selection list.
The Barton Community College baseball team and the Big Bend Batters Box are teaming up to conduct a three day baseball skills camp June 8-10. Available for ages seven through fourteen years old, participants will get instruction on all aspects of the game. Cost is $50 per person or $65 if received after June 1st. Walk-ups are welcome although pre-registration is encouraged.
The Barton Community College baseball team had its 2015 season come to an end Saturday as the Cougars dropped two games at No. 19 Neosho County Community College. Surrendering a 2-1 ninth inning lead, the Cougars dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 game in the opener and never fully recovered from the walk-off in the nightcap falling 16-6. The pair of losses caps the season at 26-27 under first year Head Coach Brent Biggs.
The Barton Community College baseball team closed out the regular season Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field with a doubleheader sweep of Seward County Community College. The Cougars scored six in the second inning but had to hold off a Saints rally including a seven run fourth holding on for a 10-9 victory in the opener. In the nightcap Barton outlasted Seward County 5-2 in an error fest nine inning victory in the season’s final game on the home turf. Barton finishes the regular season in sixth place in the Jayhawk West at 16-16 and 26-25 overall while the West champion Saints end the regular season at 21-11 in conference and 32-22 overall.
Due to Friday's evening's rain, today's Barton Community College baseball games vs Seward County Community College have changed start time and location. The doubleheader first pitch time has been moved back to 3:00 p.m., as well as, the location has moved to be played at Larks Park in Hays, Kansas.
Just when it looked like the Barton Community College baseball team might prevent Seward County Community College from wrapping up the Jayhawk West title, the Saints struck back for a doubleheader sweep Saturday. Played at Larks Park in Hays, Kansas, on the artificial turf due to Friday evening’s rain in Great Bend, the Saints looked like a home team on a mission scoring four unanswered in the last two innings in a come from behind 9-7 win in the opener then took advantage of a short right field porch with five homeruns and fifteen stranded Cougar base runners to win 12-5 in the nightcap. The pair of losses damper the hopes of moving up in the finals standings dropping to 14-16 in the West and 24-25 while the Saints improved to 21-9 and 32-20. The teams will wrap up the remaining two games and round out the regular season Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
Twenty eight games gone on the conference schedule but none are more important now for the Barton Community College baseball team than upcoming four games left in the regular season. In a tight Jayhawk West race, the 14-14 Cougars find themselves in sixth place but only one game out of third heading into this weekend’s finale against the 19-9 first place Saints of Seward County Community College. With Seward needing two wins to secure a share of the Jayhawk West title and the Cougars vying for a top four finish, high stakes will be on the line as the teams square off in a pair of 1:00 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field.
The Barton Community College baseball team got one of the games they needed Tuesday in Pratt but couldn’t come up with a sweep as the Cougars dropped the four-game series with Pratt Community College 3-1. Losing both of Monday’s games, Barton rallied from three down in Tuesday’s first game scoring eight unanswered to win 10-5 but a six-run second inning doomed the Cougars in the nightcap falling 9-1. Sitting in sixth place at 14-14 in Jayhawk West play, the 24-23 Cougars are just a game back for third place while Pratt stands a game behind Barton in seventh at 13-15 and 20-27 on the season. Barton wraps up regular season play this weekend with regional playoff seeding implications as conference leader Seward County Community College (19-9, 30-19) comes to town for a four game series as the Saints are red hot following a four game sweep of former leader Butler Community College. First pitch for doubleheader play on Saturday and Sunday scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lawson-Biggs Field with special events planned on Sunday. All games are free admission with a $5 cookout scheduled at noon Sunday in kicking off the final day of regular season with a special Bowman Family Press Box recognition ceremony taking place prior to first pitch.
The Barton Community College baseball team took care of Brown Mackie College Wednesday in Salina winning 11-0 in seven innings. Breaking open the game with four second inning runs, the Cougars pounded fifteen hits in eclipsing the ten hit mark for the seventh straight game. The non-conference victory improves Barton to 23-20 on the season while dropping the Lions to 7-32. Returning to conference action this weekend, the fourth place 13-11 Cougars have worked themselves into a position for a top four spot for the playoffs but first have to turn attention to the 17-26 and 10-14 seventh place Beavers of Pratt Community College. Weather permitting the four game weekend series’ first pitch in Pratt will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The magic in the comeback kids fell just short as the Barton Community College baseball team lost 9-6 Sunday to Hutchinson Community College. Pulling out three come-from-behind wins in the series’ first three games, the Cougars rallied from four down only to have the Blue Dragons respond with three in the final two innings to avoid Barton’s hopes of a sweep. The loss drops Barton to 22-20 on the season as Hutchinson improves to 27-16 moving alongside the Cougars into the fourth spot at 13-11 and two games from first place amidst the muddled Jayhawk West standings. Barton will step aside from conference play with a 5:00 p.m. Wednesday contest at Brown Mackie College before a three-day four-game conference series at Pratt Community College.
If Friday night’s series opener wasn’t thrilling enough for the fans, Saturday’s twin bill at Lawson-Biggs Field exceeded the thrill and not for the faint of heart as the Barton Community College baseball team came away with two come-from-behind walk off victories over Hutchinson Community College. The Cougars battled back from a four-run deficit in the first game to eventually get an extra inning walk off hit in the eighth claiming a 6-5 victory then recovered from a 6-0 nightcap deficit scoring three in the bottom of the seventh to win 13-12. Beginning the series in sixth place, the 13-10 and 22-19 Cougars slip into the fourth spot of the Jayhawk West standings while sliding Hutchinson from the second spot to sixth at 12-11 and 26-16. The teams conclude the series on Sunday with a scheduled nine inning contest beginning at 2:00 p.m.
It wasn’t the low scoring pitcher’s duel it was set up to be as the Barton Community College baseball team outslugged the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College Friday night at Lawson-Biggs Field taking the first game of the weekend four-game series 8-5. Putting together their third straight ten-plus hit game, the Cougars outhit the Blue Dragons 15-13 as the teams heated up in the middle innings scoring a combined thirteen runs in 3.5 innings. With a hotly contested race for the Jayhawk West title in progress, the Cougars remain in sixth place just two games in the loss column from the top spot at 11-10 and 20-19 overall while Hutchinson slips from second into fourth at 12-9 and 26-14 on the season. The teams will resume the series with a pair of seven inning contests on Saturday before wrapping up the four game series with another nine inning game on Sunday. First pitch for both days set for 2:00 p.m.
The Barton Community College baseball team scored in every inning Tuesday at Lawson-Biggs Field dispatching the junior varsity squad from Bethany College 16-2 in seven innings. The victory moves Barton back to the .500 mark at 19-19 on the season heading into a pivotal four-game three-day series hosting Hutchinson Community College beginning on Friday. Just two games in the loss column out of first place, the sixth place 10-10 Cougars and first place 12-8 and 24-13 Blue Dragons will begin play with a nine inning contest at 6:00 p.m. Friday before playing a pair of seven inning Saturday games at 2:00 p.m. and wrapping the series with another nine inning game at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
The Barton Community College baseball team concluded their four-game series in Garden City with a split Saturday to earn a series split with Garden City Community College. The Broncbusters took both the seven inning contests by 12-2 and 10-4 scores while the Cougars took the nine inning nightcaps each day 5-3 and 14-9. The series leaves Barton at 10-10 in the Jayhawk West and 18-19 on the season while Garden City stands at 14-10 and 24-16. The Cougars will step out of conference play Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. nine-inning contest hosting the junior varsity from Bethany College before turning attention to a pivotal four-game three-day series hosting Hutchinson Community College beginning at 6:00 p.m. Friday.
Taking a break from the conference grind, the Barton Community College baseball team stepped out of conference play Wednesday taking a 13-2 game shortened seven inning loss to Hesston College at Lawson-Biggs Field. The Larks only outhit the Cougars by two in the contest but made the most of their eight hits including a fifth inning grand slam to cruise to the victory. The victory improves Hesston to 12-12 on the season while dropping the Cougars below the .500 mark at 16-17. The Cougars, tied for fifth in the Jayhawk West at 8-8, will head to second place Garden City Community College who sits in second place at 12-8 and 22-14 on the season for the weekend’s four-game conference series. Day one of the series will have a 3:00 p.m. first pitch for Friday’s doubleheader with Saturday’s twin bill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
