For the second time in the conference season and coming against the same opponent, the No. 19 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team won a game without scoring 80 points as they defeated Butler Community College Wednesday night 74-67 at the Barton Gym. The Cougars, who defeated Butler 71-62 in January, were led by Dwayne Brunson’s twenty-six point eleven rebound performance as Barton’s bench outscored Butler 43-12. With Seward County’s Wednesday night loss the Cougars move within a game of first place but are also a game out of fifth place as the Jayhawk West race tightens up. Barton, 8-4 in conference play and 22-4 overall, holds a half game lead on Hutchinson as the two teams will face off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. With the loss Butler drops to 2-9 in conference and 8-17 overall.

After having a chance to tie for the conference lead, the No. 13 ranked Barton Community College Cougars find themselves fighting for a home playoff game just a week later as they dropped a double overtime 85-82 thriller to Garden City Community College Saturday night in Garden City. The Cougars, who led by nine with 4:03 to play in regulation, slip to 7-4 in conference play and 21-4 overall. Barton remains in second place but find themselves one loss away from dropping from the top four as the West Division tightens up for the important home playoff game. Garden City, who improves to 6-5 in conference and 18-5 overall, moves into a tie for fifth place but just a game out of a tie for second. Barton will be at home Wednesday as they take on Butler Community College at 8:00 p.m.

The No. 13 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball survived two point-bank shots in the waning seconds to hold off Dodge City Community College 83-81 Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. Fortunately for the Cougars the Conquistadors were milliseconds from sending the game into overtime as Clarence Willard’s put-back basket was just after time expired. With the win Barton keeps pace for the West title by improving to 7-3 and 22-3 overall and trailing Seward County by one game. Meanwhile Dodge drops its sixth straight to fall to 3-7 in the conference and 15-9 overall. Barton travels to Garden City Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. West game. Garden City, 5-5 in conference and 17-7 overall, dropped a 71-64 decision at Hutchinson on Wednesday night.

Trailing for thirty-seven minutes and facing a twelve point second half deficit, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team battled from behind to earn a hard fought 86-82 victory over Cloud County Community College Wednesday night in Concordia. The No. 9 ranked Cougars were held at bay most of the night until freshman Algie Key knocked down a three-pointer to give Barton its first lead at 74-73 with 2:46 to play. After exchanging buckets throughout the next minute, a three-point play by Dwayne Brunson with 1:17 to play gave Barton a 79-77 lead it wouldn’t relinquish. With the victory coupled with Seward County’s home loss to Hutchinson, Barton moves into a three-way tie for first place with Seward and Colby. Barton improves to 20-2 on the season and 6-2 in conference play while Cloud drops to 4-4 in conference and 14-8 overall. A battle for first place and between nationally ranked teams will take place this Saturday as Barton travels to Liberal to take on the No. 12 ranked Saints in a 8:00 p.m. Jayhawk West contest.

It wasn’t the dominating performance the Barton Community College men’s basketball team had three days prior, but the No. 10 ranked Cougars had complete control in its 88-76 victory Saturday night over Pratt Community College at the Barton gym. After tying the game at two apiece, Barton stretched a twelve point halftime advantage to fifteen points in the second half and cruised to the Jayhawk West win. The Cougars, 19-2 on the season and in second place in the conference at 5-2, drop Pratt below .500 to 10-11 overall and 1-6 in conference. Barton will travel to Concordia to take on Cloud County Community College Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. The Thunderbirds, 14-7 overall and 4-3 in conference, are coming off a tough 64-56 loss at Hutchinson where they led by thirteen and held Hutch to four first half field goals.

Trailing by six in the opening two minutes, the No. 10 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team utilized a 14-0 run and never looked back in easily defeating Colby Community College 88-65 Wednesday night in Colby. The Cougars, 18-2 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, never let the Trojans any closer than five and led by as many as thirty-three with twelve minutes remaining in the game to pick up the road Jayhawk West win. Colby, who was previously alone in second place in front of Barton, falls to 17-4 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. Barton will be back at the Barton Gym on Saturday as they welcome Pratt Community College to town for an 8:00pm tip-off.

In a Jayhawk West battle of nationally ranked teams, the No. 14 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team never trailed in the contest and went on to defeat No. 19 ranked Hutchinson Community College 93-71 Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. After starting the conference season with two straight losses, the Cougars have won three straight to move up to a third place tie in the West standings at 3-2 and improving to 17-2 overall. Losing its second straight conference game, Hutchinson drops to 1-3 in the West and 14-4 overall. The Cougars will have a week off before they are back in action January 25 when they travel to Colby in another Jayhawk West battle.

In what could be considered an early conference season ‘must win’, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team picked up a much needed home conference win Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars shot 50% for the game and had five players score in double figures as they defeated Garden City Community College 82-72 to improve to 1-2 in conference and 15-2 overall. With the loss Garden City drops to 13-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The No. 15 ranked Cougars will travel to El Dorado this Saturday to take on Butler Community College for a 7:30 p.m. Jayhawk West matchup. The Grizzlies, who were also seeking their first conference win last night, picked up a big road victory by defeating No. 12 Hutchinson 62-61.

After leading by twelve at the break, the Cougars were outscored by eighteen points in the second half to drop its Jayhawk West conference opener. With the loss Barton falls to 14-1 on the season while Seward improves to 13-2. Barton will look to rebound this Saturday as they travel to Dodge City to take on the Conquistadors in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. Much like Seward, Dodge City picked up a big conference road win as they defeated No. 10 Hutchinson 78-75.

Making its debut in the recently released NJCAA Division I national poll, the No. 16 Barton Community College men’s basketball team shook off a pesky McPherson College Junior Varsity for a 94-54 victory Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The 10-0 Cougar men, along with the Lady Cougar basketball team, will play a couple of games this weekend in the Hesston Classic. On Friday both teams will take on the host Hesston College in 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. games respectively. The Barton-Hesston men’s game will be a rematch of the Cougar’s 112-65 win back on November 3. On Saturday the Lady Cougars will play Brown Mackie College at 2:00 p.m. followed by the Cougar men taking on Northern Oklahoma College-Enid at 4:00 pm.

In a final tune up for its upcoming weekend classic, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team struggled early but found its high tempo offense in defeating Southwestern College Junior Varsity 113-57 Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The 6-0 Cougars will play three games this weekend in the Highland Hotel Booster Club Classic which includes fellow Jayhawk Conference members Independence Community College and Labette Community College. Barton will play at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday against Independence and Labette respectively, then wrap up the Classic with a 3:00 p.m. game on Sunday against Frank Phillips College.

The Cougars travel to Salina for the Salina Classic to play Kansas Wesleyan JV at 3:00 pm. on Friday then face the always tough Brown Mackie Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
